Seven personnel leave CPA, replacement hires approved
The Commonwealth Ports Authority lost seven employees this month due to retirements and resignations, according to the CPA board personnel committee chair Margaret Prater.
She recommended that all vacated slots be filled with replacements so not to jeopardize the CNMI’s seaport and airport operations. The board approved the recommendation.
On Saipan, replacements are being sought for an assistant operations supervisor, statistician, and a firefighter for the Aircraft Rescue Firefighting unit. On Rota, CPA is looking for a maintenance worker and a firefighter for its ARFF division. Tinian needs a new radio operator and an ARFF trainee.
Of these vacancies, CPA decided to promote individuals within the agency for the assistant operations supervisor and statistician posts.
Prater also reported that CPA needs a procurement officer, whose position awaits a budget for fiscal year 2012.
According to CPA executive director Edward Deleon Guerrero, the agency remains committed to keeping its 198 employees. CPA is allowed up to 228 employees this fiscal year.
Since October last year, 30 posts in both airports and seaports have been left unfilled to realize some savings in personnel cost. These vacant positions will not be filled, unless the management classifies the post as critical to operation.
CPA personnel continue working on an 80-hour biweekly schedule and remain better off compared to employees of the central government and other autonomous agencies that have enforced work hour reductions through austerity Fridays.
CPA projects combined revenues to reach over $16 million this fiscal year. For the airport division, the agency forecasts to collect $10.695 million, while seaport activities are expected to rake in $6.614 million.
Meantime, the board re-elected Manny Villagomez for the vice chairmanship during last week’s meeting. Board committees are being handled by the following board members: Fermin Sakisat, personnel committee; Benigno Sablan, seaport facility; Barrie Toves, fiscal and financial; and Manny Villagomez, airport facility. Prater is the board’s secretary and treasurer.
