Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence executive director Maisie B. Tenorio urged the community to support the Pacific Islands Club Palooza event, which would benefit Guma Esperansa, the only shelter for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking.

“I know times are tough, so please know that your hard-earned money will go to an incredible cause,” said Tenorio.

Tenorio said Guma Esperansa shelters women and their children who are fleeing abusive and violent relationships. “Often, the shelter provides the first good night’s sleep in years for children who experience domestic violence,” she said.

Tenorio added that Guma Esperansa also offers classes, counseling, advocacy, case management, hope, and healing.

Guma Esperansa manager Laurie Ogumoro said in a phone interview that they feel grateful for being chosen as the beneficiary for this year’s Palooza event.

“We are so grateful for the ongoing community support and this year marks the 10th year that the shelter has been opened to the community,” she told Saipan Tribune.

While she acknowledged the economic recession affecting everyone, Ogumoro said they will be thankful for the support they will get for the shelter.

“We do realize that these are tough times but we’ll appreciate everyone that comes. We’ll greatly appreciate the support,” she said.

PIC Palooza, which is open for individuals 21 years or older, will be held today, Saturday, at 7pm at the Charley’s Cabaret.

Entrance fee, which is $25 per person, includes beer, wine, soda, and appetizers. The event, which has a country and western theme, will feature games, raffle prizes, and live entertainment. For more information, call 237-5170.
