NMC panel denies ex-faculty members’ appeal, grievance

The Northern Marianas College management has been found to have not committed any wrongful act when it terminated the employment of Wil Maui and did not renew the contract of Romeo Cuellar in August this year.
These were the recent decisions issued by NMC’s appeals committee, which heard and processed the faculty members’ cases.
Saipan Tribune learned that the panel’s decisions were released late last month. It was learned that Maui filed an appeal while Cuellar lodged a grievance against NMC president Dr. Sharon Hart.
Cuellar is the former counselor for Disabilities Support Services while Maui is a former computer instructor at the college.
Maui confirmed the denial but refused to comment further.
“Yes, I got a response back from the appeals committee and the committee denied my appeal,” Maui told Saipan Tribune in a Nov. 21 email. As of yesterday, requests for further comments and reaction were not returned.
Saipan Tribune also tried to obtain Cuellar’s reaction but he declined to comment.
Saipan Tribune learned that the appeals panel was chaired by board vice chair Elaine Orilla-Hocog.
Maui, through his lawyer Mark B. Hanson, filed his three-page appeal on Aug. 27 with the Board of Regents and Hart. A hearing was sought on the case as well as the creation of an employee appeals committee at the college.
Maui was issued a termination notice on Aug. 20, citing him for insubordination and refusal to do assigned work.
Maui denied the allegation, saying NMC breached his contract by terminating him without cause.
