Ill-prepared for college

I read the Dec. 12 article about NMC director of Institutional Effectiveness Jackie Che's report to the Board of Regents with concern. The implication was that NMC was somehow deficient in serving students in developmental classes. She needed to place that in a broader context. As a former Adult Basic Education and developmental English instructor, I know that NMC has substantial programs in place to assist students who place below the standard college freshman level.

As a former Adult Basic Education and developmental English instructor, I know that NMC has substantial programs in place to assist students who place below the standard college freshman level. Based on my personal knowledge at NMC, and that of my late mother at American Samoa Community College, I ask Ms. Che one question: How many of the unsuccessful students in developmental classes were high school graduates? The college cannot make up for years of poor performance in a semester or two and that fact should be made clear.
