Tanapag Stream red-flagged

The Division of Environmental Quality has red-flagged the Tanapag Stream,

The Division of Environmental Quality has red-flagged the Tanapag Stream, which is located near Santa Remedios Road, just south of the Tanapag Meeting Hall before the intersection of Haraw Street. DEQ advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of this stream for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.

Samples collected from this site contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria (enterococci) that exceeded the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards. These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water.

DEQ analyzed four samples taken from the Tanapag Stream on Jan. 3, 2014. The excessive concentrations of enterococci bacteria in the stream may be the source of bacteria that triggered red flag advisories at the Tanapag Meeting Hall Beach in previous weeks. For more information, contact DEQ at 664-8500. (DEQ)
