A female employee of a store in Garapan was taken to the hospital for chest pains after a man allegedly pushed her for trying to stop him from stealing 12 cans of beer that he placed in the bottom compartment of a baby stroller Saturday afternoon.

The woman was complaining of chest pain and breathing difficulty when police officers arrived at the scene. An ambulance transported her to the Commonwealth Healthcare Center.

Ryan D. Cavalear, 31, was arrested for assault and battery, theft, and disturbing the peace.

At a hearing yesterday, Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho imposed a $175 cash bail.

Police detective Therese S. Kintoki stated in her report that two police officers responded to the New Chang Ming Market after the Department of Public Safety received a disturbance call on Saturday afternoon.

One officer reviewed the footage on the store’s surveillance camera, which showed a man identified as Cavalear pushing a baby stroller with a toddler inside.

Cavalear proceeded to the store’s beverage section, took 12 cans of beer and put them in the bottom compartment of the stroller.

Cavalear allegedly walked to the store’s door and tried to leave without paying for the beer. An employee, however, followed and grabbed the stroller to prevent him from leaving.

As they were each tugging on the stroller, the employee took out the beer and put them on the floor. Cavalear allegedly pushed her on the chest, carried his baby and went back into the store.

The employee told police that she noticed Cavalear enter the store thrice. She saw him taking a pair of Chopper zorries and leaving the store without paying for it. When Cavalear took the beers, the employee followed him.

Police officers responded and arrested Cavalear. The baby was released to her mother.
