Higos seen to weaken by Saturday

Based on information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Typhoon Higos continues moving toward the northwest.

No watches or warnings are in effect in the Northern Marianas region.

At 1pm yesterday, Typhoon Higos was located 660 miles east of Guam and 600 miles east of Saipan, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. Its present movement is north-northwest. at 7 mph.

Higos is forecast to continue a weakening trend through the rest of the week. By Saturday morning, Higos is expected to be a weakening tropical depression near Minami Tori Shima.

Typhoon force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center.

Residents of the Marianas are encouraged to stay informed on this developing weather situation. Keep abreast of the latest forecasts and listen for any further statements from the National Weather Service and the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

The agency will be monitoring the movement of Typhoon Higos and will be issuing bulletins as they become available through local media sources and NOAA weather radio broadcast on 162.5 megahertz, or call the CNMI EOC Dispatch Center at 237-8000 or 211, and for the Northern Islands to contact CNMI EOC Dispatch Center at high frequency single side band radio on frequency 5.205.0.
