J.J. Atalig failed to top the third of the five-game tryouts for the Pacific Games-bound CNMI Men’s National Golf Team but the veteran par-buster is still the frontrunner in clinching one of the four spots.

Atalig shot an 80 to finish second behind Harry Nakamura’s 74 in last Saturday’s third and last playdate at the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort.

In the race to the Top 4 national team berths, Atalig is still ahead, followed by Xerxes Camacho, Eddie Peter, Harry Nakamura, and Louie Tilipao.

Tryout organizer Peter said the fourth and fifth games would be played at Kingfisher Golflinks on Feb. 14 and 21. Registration starts at 10am and tee time is set at 11am.

Peter added that all golfers who joined the first three games of the tryouts will move on to the next round where they will play another five straight Saturdays starting on Feb. 28.

Scores made in the five games played in the first round will not be carried over. Each tryout day plays 18 holes.

The four best golfers and one alternate after the last five rounds will comprise the CNMI Men’s National Golf Team that will compete in the 2015 Pacific Games set in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea from July 4 to 18.

Peter is again inviting all local golfers to join them on Saturday at Kingfisher to support the CNMI Men’s National Golf Team.

Participants in the last two rounds will only pay the green fee and an additional $20 for Team CNMI’s fund to the Pacific Games.

Peter is hoping to form a strong team that will contend for the 12 medals at stake in the golf event of the Pacific Games, which will be held at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club in the National Capital District
