Miyazuka again tops Tinian Turquoise
KAMMER BEACH, Tinian—Hideya Miyazuka of Japan topped the 15th Annual Tinian Turquoise Blue Triathlon, besting 46 other competitors last Saturday.

Miyazuka finished the triathlon in 2:41:07 beating his record last year of 2:42:13. He was followed by Peter Prestley of Saipan, who clocked in at 2:48:19, and Yasunori Sugimura of Japan who crossed the finish line 2:48:51.
Miyazuka, who had the No. 1 marked on his shoulder, was the first to finish in the swim and bike splits. For the swim Miyazuka’s time was 0:25:35 and for the bike it was 1:28:57. Sugimura then beat Miyazuka in the run with his 0:44:54.
The top female competitors were Kimiko McKaga of Saipan with a 3:13:12 time. Kaitlin Mattos was the second top competitor with time of 3:20:30 time and Lorie Hutchison with a time of 3:29:34.
Surprisingly, Hayato Kumagai, the youngest who at 14 years of age, finished at 17th place out of 46 competitors for the triathlon. His time was 3:38:49.
For the triathlon team, Margaret Rose’s team won with a score of 3:14:23. Sayuri Kondo won for the 1.5km swim with a time of 0:37:06. For the 3.0km swim, Akie Matoba of Japan won with a time of 1:01:15, followed by Kazumi Mineo (1:06:12) and Masaaki Aoki (1:30:37).
For the 4.5km swim, Carollyn Pierce won with a time of 1:32:54 and Shinobu Takasaki came in second with a time of 1:38:04, while R.J. Pierce came in first in the young category with a time of 1:32:30.
The triathlon started with a 1.5K, 3.0K, and 4.5K swim. A 40-kilometer bike race from Kammer Beach and a two-lap run from the Tinian Suicide Cliff to the airport intersection road and then down to Kammer Beach. Then a 10-kilometer run to Suicide Cliff and back to Kammer Beach.
After the triathlon, an award ceremony was held at the festival grounds in Kammer Beach.
“The MVA extends its appreciation and congratulations to the organizer and participants of the Tinian Turquoise Blue Triathlon. This is the second year that their event coincides with the festival. We invite you and our guest from the neighboring islands to take some time from the festival to explore the island,” Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Perry Tenorio said.
