Dandan Middle School led a healthy meal contest to choose a winning meal to be featured in next school year’s lunch menu.

A Dandan middle school student’s pork, tofu, and beans with brown rice meal will make it on their lunch menu next year after topping 63 other meals in a healthy meal contest.

Sixth grader Wilshae Monsalud was the winner. His meal also included orange for his fruit option and yogurt for dessert.

“My class did a school project on the five major food groups in which they created their healthy meals,” said health and physical education teacher Joe Villacrusis.

“All of these students were taught the importance of having all the five major food groups (grains, vegetables, fruits, protein, and dairy) based on MyPlate.gov,” or the national guidelines for healthy meal portions and ingredients, he said.

“All the meals prepared by the students were healthy suggestions. They mentioned that these are foods they would like to see served in their cafeteria,” he said.

Principal Lynn Mendiola, vice principal Reo Arriola, Public School System nutritionist Kaisa Anderson, and LSG chef George Santos judged the competition meals.

Villacrusis said all four judges enjoyed the event and agreed that Monsalud’s meal was the best.

Out of 63 students in Villacrusis sixth grade class, only 11 made it to the final judging.
