AG says they will be working with Inos admin in drafting regs
Attorney General Edward Manibusan said yesterday that the U.S. Supreme Court has spoken on the issue of same sex marriage and that the ruling compels the states and rerritories to follow.
“Thus, the Commonwealth has to comply with the decision of the Supreme Court in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges,” said Manibusan in his reply to Saipan Tribune’s request for comment about the U.S. high court’s ruling.
Manibusan said the Office of the Attorney General will be working with the administration of Gov. Eloy S. Inos at drafting regulations and conforming the marriage applications to the ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court.
The AG did not indicate a timeframe as when they are going to finalize the regulations.
Inos earlier stated that he and Lt. Gov. Ralph DLG. Torres will consult with the AG and CNMI mayors to see how they can initiate the necessary changes to current regulations to comply with the U.S. Supreme Court and ensure an equal application of constitutional rights throughout the CNMI.
In the Obergefell v. Hodges, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a historic ruling through a 5-4 vote that legalized same sex marriage across the 50 States and the Insular Areas such as the CNMI.
