Liberation Day parade, activities cancelled
For the second straight year, Saturday’s scheduled Liberation Day Parade has been postponed until further notice, including all liberation activities beginning yesterday due to Typhoon Chan-Hom.
In a statement issued at 4:25pm yesterday, Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang said that due to the approaching storm, which is expected to reach the CNMI on July 4 and 5 (Saturday and Sunday), the parade and festivities will be postponed until further notice.
Apatang is also advising all concessionaires, parade participants, performers, guests, and visitors that activities as of yesterday, July 2, today, July 3, and the weekend, July 4 and 5, are cancelled.
“On behalf of the [Saipan] Mayor’s Office, Skywalker Communications Group, and the 2015 Liberation Day Committee, I would like to apologize for the cancellation and for any inconvenience,” Apatang said.
The 2014 Liberation Day Parade was also postponed on July 4 last year because of a tropical storm, but was held the next day, July 5.
“We just got word this afternoon that Saipan is in Typhoon Condition 3 already. Our office’s safety office informed us that he got word from the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management,” Saipan Mayor’s Office special assistant Henry Hofschneider said.
Skywalker Communications business director Elvis Yu said that everything will be down at the Liberation Festivities grounds to prepare for the storm.
Aside from the Liberation festivities and parade being cancelled, the featured evening event for the “Anuhea” concert by Steven Brownstein Entertainment has also been cancelled.
“The Saipan Mayor’s Office has cancelled the Liberation Festivities on Saturday and because of that the Anuhea concert scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled. If the concert can be rescheduled we will let everyone know,” Steven Brownstein said.
“We pray for the safety of the wonderful people of Saipan…Please stay tuned to the Steven Brownstein Entertainment Facebook page for more info,” he added.
