Laolao Bay Golf & Resort revived its junior camp where 20 kids, mostly Koreans, ages from 7 to 13 years old are learning golf and at the same time writing and speaking English.

The program, which was stopped two years ago, was first done in the summer according to Laolao Bay Golf course manager Tony Satur. The three-week long program started last July 20 and ends on Aug. 9.

The program is different from Laolao’s Fall/Spring camp. There are six girls and 14 boys that joined the program.

“We used to have the same program a few years back but this is the first time that we held it as a summer camp. We also reserved one free slot for the Joeten Kiyu Public Library,” Satur told Saipan Tribune.

“We have 14 during the first week of the camp and 20 in the second week. Most of the kids already know how to play, some already had formal lessons, and know the basics of golf. But there are two who are beginners,” added Satur.

The CNMI Sports Hall of Famer said the campers are having a great time learning golf and about the English language.

“Some are taking playing golf seriously. They are working hard on their game and we noticed improvements,” Satur said.

Campers learn about skills, safety, and etiquette from 9am to 12noon while English lessons start after the lunch break.

Campers had a half-day session at the driving range on Tuesday while they played for nine holes at Laolao’s east course. They played a full 18 holes, also at the east course, yesterday.

Satur said he is thankful that the program earned the full support of Laolao Golf Resort president Kim Chang Ho.

Satur, veteran parbusters J.J. Atalig, Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho, Jenny Hegland, Kang Seung Woo, and Jack San Nicolas are the coaches of the junior golf program.
