Residents worry of another ‘typhoon’;
NWS monitoring disturbance in the Pacific
Four days after Typhoon Soudelor devastated Saipan, rumors of another “typhoon” coming are worrying some residents, particularly those that are still recovering and staying in shelters.
“The community doesn’t have to worry,” public information specialist LJ Castro said.
“We wanted to dispel any rumors of an incoming typhoon. I know there’s a public perception that there’s going to be an additional typhoon,” said special projects coordinator Kevin Bautista.
Bautista said they were able to contact the National Weather Service and the Guam Homeland Security and said that there is a trough at the back end of Soudelor.
“Weather like that is usually common after a storm passes. We are in the rainy season and we just want to make sure that everybody’s rest assured that sometimes this comes with the territory as the storm passes,” Castro said.
Yesterday’s forecast from NWS Guam said that they are monitoring a tropical disturbance—not a typhoon—east of the northern CNMI.
The statement said “the main threat from this system will be heavy rainfall to Alamagan, Pagan and Agrihan as it drifts north-northwestward.”
It said the disturbance was at 185 miles east of Alamagan or 205 miles east southeast of Agrihan. It was moving slowly to the north-northwest.
The forecast said “computer models indicate this disturbance will slowly develop as it moves toward the north-northwest over the next few days, possibly as a tropical depression by Friday evening.”
NWS said the system is still developing and that it is not yet possible to give detailed information on its future track and changes in forecast track are possible.
