KagES to get temporary transformer

Kagman Elementary School may soon get its power back.

More than three months after Typhoon Soudelor hit Saipan, KagES is still not on the grid because of its different distribution system for power.

“They have a ground-based transformer. That school, whoever built it, was designed that way,” Commonwealth Utilities Corp. public information officer Brad Ruszala said, adding that CUC does not own the transformer in KagES.

“What we will do is bring power along our lines and connect it to the ground transformer,” Ruszala said.

According to KagES principal Dr. Ignacia Demapan, they are working on getting a temporary transformer while they wait for a permanent replacement.

“We have already ordered our transformer from off-island,” Demapan said.

She added that loaning a transformer that belongs to the Department of Public Safety is currently in the works.

“On Thursday one of the companies will proceed with having that transformer transferred to our school,” Demapan said.

She added that power restoration depends on how fast the people will work on it; however, a certification has to be made before CUC can energize the school.

“Instead of being able to power them up right away, we won’t be able to power them until they pass some certification,” Ruszala said.
