CNMI MathCourt team to start practice
CNMI MathCourt team head coach Manny Borja will begin preparing the six members and six alternates in time for the Mathleague.org national finals set on May 13 at the Brookside Charter School in Kansas City, Missouri.
Borja, an environmental engineering graduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also coached last year’s team.
Agape Christian School senior Bei Bei Chen heads the team and will be joined by Marianas High School’s B. Masrur Alam, fellow ACS students Claire Song and Allan Zhao, and Saipan International School’s Myung Jae Cho and Jaehoon Jang.
Three of the six alternates were also from ACS—En Jie Hu, Andrea Feng and Rebecca Xu—while the rest are from MHS and Marianas Baptist Academy.
Borja said he would drill the team with exercises and problems in algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
“My advice to them is to study important math topics, review each problem and talk to those people who experienced competing in the nationals before,” said Borja.
More than 200 CNMI private and public high school students joined in the Commonwealth’s MatchCourt competition. From 200, the list was trimmed to 60 and to 22, who qualified for the CNMI state finals held last Saturday at the Saipan Southern High School.
