Unified response to unexploded ordnance at the Port of Saipan
SANTA RITA, Guam—On Feb. 12, 2016 the CNMI Homeland Security & Emergency Management and the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment (MSD) Saipan, responded to a discovery of a WWII UXO at the Port of Saipan.
On the afternoon of Feb. 12, 2016, Sector Guam received a report from MSD Saipan of the discovery of a UXO located at the Commonwealth Port Authority in Tanapag Harbor, Saipan. The UXO was revealed during the excavation for a pipeline construction project. A Unified Command (UC) has been assembled which is led by CNMI Homeland Security & Emergency Management and the U.S. Coast Guard. A safety zone is in place around the buried UXO and the Commonwealth Ports Authority Police is ensuring the area is secure. The UC coordinated the deployment of a specialized U.S Navy Explosive
Ordnance Disposal Detachment from Guam, which is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, Feb. 16, to conduct further assessment and recommend the way forward.
The Port of Saipan will remain open to normal operations as the site is stable until advised otherwise.
