Local bands were featured at the second weekend of the Lunar New Year celebrations at the Paseo de Marianas in Garapan last Saturday.

Musicians such as Roman Tudela, with his ukulele, and the Revive Band rendered songs from various genres for residents and tourists passing by and watching.

K-pop entertainers also performed to bring joy to the audience.

Last Saturday, performers from off-island also made a great show giving the audience a taste of the authentic Chinese and Korean cultures and art.

According to Marianas Visitors Authority’s Destination Enhancement Committee chair Ed Arriola Jr., they want to hold regular events like these in Paseo in the hopes of reviving the area as well as the rest of Garapan.

Arriola said they are targeting to hold monthly shows in Paseo to bring more people in the area.

Based on the exit surveys that the tourists fill out when leaving the islands, Arriola said those who visit the CNMI wanted more nighttime activities, activities that showcase the islands’ culture, and other exciting activities.

“The tourists that we are getting now are not the same. They’ve seen it all,” Arriola said.

Arriola said holding regular events in Paseo would serve the purpose of why the road was closed down in the first place in 2003. He said the area is safe for everyone to have a good time as the police are just nearby.

Arriola said they plans to hold an Easter egg hunt in Paseo in March in celebration of Easter Sunday.
