Marianas High School STEM participants and students of Intro to Careers won first place in the University of Guam’s Green Dream Home Competition held last Monday at Lotte Hotel Guam.

The group bested 22 teams from private and public schools on Guam.

“We feel shocked yet good bringing the trophy home. We’re relieved that the competition is over. We were so nervous the entire day,” said the winning team. “We can’t wait to join the GDH competition and STEM Fair again next year. It was a great experience!”

The team will now present to audience and attendants of the 2016 Island Sustainability Conference today, Wednesday.

Two years ago Education Commissioner Dr. Rita Sablan attended the UOG Sustainability Conference in Guam where she saw impressive model homes by students competing in the Green Dream Home Competition.

The CNMI was invited to compete the following year. It was great news for Sablan who had a STEM initiative to kick up STEM (Science, Mathematics, Engineering & Math) in the CNMI to another level.

Former PSS central program coordinators Annette Pladevega (Science) and Jeaniffer Cubangbang (IT) did projects with students from Saipan Southern High, Tinian Jr. Sr. High, & Dr. Rita H. Inos Jr. Sr. High, and Grace Christian Academy.

It went well with students that they decided to compete school-wide and island-wide this 2016. All CNMI schools were invited to compete with their winning school’s models in the CNMI Island-wide STEM Fair held last March 12.

With the assistance of judging from contractors and engineers from HBR International Inc. using UOG’s green dream home competition judging rubrics Marianas High School and Kagman High School came up on top, thanks to teachers Cubangbang and Pladevega who are now classroom teachers to the winning school teams.
