670 Sonics beat Wong, secure second seeding

The 670 Sonics prevailed in the lone game played in the U15 division of the Inaugural Frank M. Diaz Memorial Youth League after routing Wong, 59-46, last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Last weekend was the conclusion of the round-robin regular season and the Sonics ended up at second place with their 5-1 record, a win behind the unbeaten and top finishers Ol’Aces (6-0), Wong wrapped up the elimination round with a 4-2 card to rank third and ahead of NMI Rollers (3-3). The Top 4 squads will play in the playoffs, beginning this Saturday, while the Tanapag Warriors (2-4), Kanaka Gray (1-5), and Kanaka Blue (0-5) were out of the competition. Tanapag and NMI Rollers won via forfeits ragainst Kanaka Gray and Blue, respectively.

John Caruana, Rafael Ordona, and Champ Sabangan teamed up in lifting the Sonics to the 13-point win. Caruana and Ordona led all scorers as they registered 12 points apiece, while Sabangan chipped in 11.

The Sonics and Wong engaged in a close fight in the first three periods before the former gained momentum in the fourth and final canto to earn the double-digit spread. Sabangan anchored the breakaway, as he drilled the Sonics’ first 6 points in the fourth frame. Caruana and Ordona added 4 markers apiece in the pivotal fourth.

Meanwhile, in the boys U18 game last Monday, Rollers Blue crushed the Junior Sonics, 103-51.

With the victory, Rollers Blue improved its record to 5-1 and tied the 670 Sonics in first place (pending results of last night’s game) in the nine-team field. The Junior Sonics are at the cellar, matching the 1-5 mark of Wong.

The Kagman Riserz is lurking behind Rollers Blue and 670 Sonics with its 4-1 card, while the Ol’Aces are ranked third with their 3-1 slate, followed by Tanapag Warriors (2-3), Rollers Red (1-3), and Rollers White (1-3).

Christian Arceo towed Rollers Blue to the easy victory after scoring 26 points, while Aaron Ogumoro backed him up, contributing 16.
