War Survivor Day today in Guam

Share

Today is the annual day set aside to recognize war survivors in Guam.

The annual War Survivor Day became official through legislation sponsored last year by Senator Frank F. Blas, Jr. that was signed into law and declares June 28 as the annual special holiday in their honor.

“While we continue to fight for appropriate recognition of their suffering in U.S. Congress, we must do everything we can here in Guam to honor the memories and the stories of those who endured so much,” Blas said. “The legacy and heritage of our war survivors, known as our Greatest Generation, should be recognized by all the people of Guam.”

The date of June 28 is held in memorial every year in honor of the June 28, 1947 transmittal from President Harry S. Truman to the U.S. House of Representatives requesting consideration of the appropriation submitted by the Navy Department to pay claims for death or personal injury to residents of Guam.
