Man guilty over beating of wife at restaurant

Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho yesterday found Gui Fang Lai guilty for beating up his wife for not giving him money at a restaurant in Susupe.

At a bench trial, Camacho found the testimonies of the victim and the government’s four other witnesses as credible.

The judge said the government presented proof beyond a reasonable doubt as to the charge of assault and battery.

Camacho said all the government’s witnesses’ testimonies established all the elements of assault and battery.

Assault and battery carries a maximum sentence of one-year imprisonment.

Sentencing of the 42-year-old Lai will be on Nov. 16, 2016 at 9am.

Assistant attorney general Betsy Weintraub prosecuted the case. AAG Jonathan Robert Glass Jr. assisted her at the trial.

Assistant public defender Matthew Meyer served as counsel for Lai. Office of the Public Defender’s legal intern Janina Maratita also appeared.

Weintraub called to the stand the victim and four other witnesses—Lai’s sister-in-law and brother-in-law and police officers Norris Kwon and Chris Deleon Guerrero.

Weintraub submitted in court five exhibits containing photos of the victim and her injuries, as well as a photo of the crime scene at Good Day Restaurant.

Lai was accused of beating up his wife for not giving him money, chasing her with an axe, and breaking items at Good Day Restaurant in Susupe on March 20, 2016.

Last month, the Office of the Attorney General dismissed the most serious of the charges—assault with a dangerous weapon—the samurai sword and butcher knife.

Prior to the start of the trial, OAG orally moved to dismiss with prejudice the disturbing the peace and criminal mischief charges. Meyer did not object.

Camacho granted the motion.
