High surf seen today
Based on information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, la arge northeast trade-wind swell and northwest swell generated by strong winds behind a north Pacific cold front will maintain hazardous surf for the Marianas the next couple days
A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6am Saturday. Surf is currently hazardous at 9 to 12 feet along west, north, and northeast facing reefs. Surf will begin to subside tonight, Friday night, and could fall below hazardous levels Saturday morning. Surf will be slower to fall along northeast facing coasts.
A small craft advisory remains in effect until 6am Saturday.
Fresh to strong winds of 20 to 25 knots with near gale gusts are expected through Friday then will gradually decrease Friday night and Saturday. Combined seas of 11 to 13 feet will remain hazardous through Friday before subsiding Friday night or Saturday
Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid sailing in these conditions. Avoid venturing near reefs along exposed beaches, especially west, north and northeast facing where there will be a high risk of life threatening rip currents. (EOC)
