The resurfacing work at the Oleai Sports Complex’s track and field facility has been progressing nicely, according to Northern Marianas Sports Association executive director Tony Rogolifoi.
The old surface at the eight-lane track oval has been removed and since last week, contractor Tang’s Corp. has been working with the drainage system of the facility.
“I was told that the old track has no proper drainage system so that’s one of the factors that contributed to the faster deterioration of the facility. Now, they are working on a better drainage system to ensure the longevity of the new track,” Rogolifoi said.
As for the layering of the new track, Rogolifoi said he was informed by one of the contractor’s employees that some materials for the resurfacing project have arrived.
“I will be arranging a meeting with the owner of Tang’s Corp. to get more updates about the materials,” the NMSA official said.
Rogolifoi also assured that the layering work at the track will not start until the contractor brings in an expert that would make sure that measurements and the resurfacing of the facility are done in accordance with the standards of the International Association of Athletics Federations.
The contractor has a little over two months to complete the project as deadline was set to 150 days after the notice to proceed (Nov. 15, 2016) was issued.
“I am positive that the resurfacing work will be done on time,” Rogolifoi said.
Meanwhile, the NMSA executive director disclosed that the bidder which won the contract for the repair works at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium failed to complete the required documents thus the delay in the project.
Rogolifoi added that NMSA and the CNMI Capital Improvement Projects are looking into the contractor that offers the second lowest bid for the project. However, the NMSA official learned that the contractor is the same company that worked on the Ada Gym flooring, which now has some damage.
“I learned the materials used before were for households. We need the materials that are really appropriate for the gym so I want to find out first what the other contractor is offering. We don’t want to see the same damage in such a short time again,” Rogolifoi said.
