HANMI: Hotel occupancy rate at 60 pct. in May 2012
The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands reported 59.76 percent occupancy among its 12 member hotels for May 2012, a 7-percent increase from May 2011.
A total of 44,495 of 74,462 available room nights were sold in May 2012, compared to 39,319 of 74,648 of available room nights sold over the same period last year. Room rates were $97.39 during the month, compared to $92.19 last May.
“May is traditionally a shoulder season for travel, but 60 percent occupancy falls way below the break-even point of 80 percent,” said HANMI chair Nick Nishikawa. “We are looking forward to more visitors in the summer months.”
So far this calendar year, hotel occupancy is at an average of 75.97 percent, 9 percent higher than last year’s.
May year-to-year comparisons also reflect the room closures of Coral Ocean Point Resort earlier this year.
The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands was established in 1985 as a professional forum for the hospitality industry of the NMI. (HANMI)
