The valedictorian of the Northern Marianas International School says he wishes to be a chef during the school’s graduation last Saturday at the Grandvrio Resort.
John L. Bayking, who was promoted to high school as valedictorian of the Class of 2017, would be attending Marianas High School.
“I am happy with what I have achieved so far in my life,” he said, adding that he was happy to be able to finally get into high school. He did acknowledge that it’s going to be tougher. “I think [high school] would be hard, as they all say.”
Bayking said his plan to become a pastry chef has been in his head since he was in sixth grade.
Salutatorian Mikaela T. Vergara, who also looks forward to high school life at MHS, plans to become a photographer in the future, according to her yearbook entry.
“It feels great to be looking forward to a new chapter of my life,” said Vergara when asked about her upcoming high school life. Like Bayking, Vergara is also expecting harder subjects in high school.
Eddie B. Valdoz was named the elementary valedictorian of NMIS.
Bayking received awards as a participant in the 2017 regional spelling bee competition, second placer at the Thespian regional competition, qualifier for the National Junior Forensics League regionals, and a participant at the Academic Challenge Bowl.
Vergara was promoted to high school as president of the NMIS Student Council and is a regional finalist of the National Junior Speech and Debate Association/Thespian regional finalist.
