Tropical storm intensifying into a typhoon

Tropical Storm Noru, located near Iwo To yesterday, is intensifying and possibly becoming a typhoon this morning, Monday.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Guam, Noru is forecast to strengthen slightly Sunday night. As of 2pm yesterday, it was moving south-southwestward with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour.

Noru’s center was located 90 miles south of Iwo To or 425 miles northwest of Agrihan, 645 miles north-northwest of Saipan, and 730 miles north-northwest of Guam.

Noru was moving 195 degrees at 9 miles per hour and expected to turn west-southwest Sunday night and slow its forward speed.

The storm brought rain yesterday afternoon to Saipan.
