Rota Mayor Efraim M. Atalig last week designated the next two weeks of Aug. 21 to Aug. 31 as Aluf Luta Week, to recognize hand waving and its role in Rota’s culture as a tradition that signifies peace, friendliness, and respect.

Atalig was joined by members of the community, representatives of autonomous agencies, and department heads and staff at the Aluf Luta proclamation ceremony at the Office of the Mayor on Aug. 21.

Atalig believes the gesture should be fully appreciated and recognized through proclamation and should be practiced with dignity and pride by Rota’s people in every possible way.

The proclamation was read by students from the Dr. Rita H. Inos Junior Senior High School. Adina Reyes, a junior, read the English version of the proclamation while Dawno Agbayani, a junior, read the Chamorro version.

There will be a signboard competition and song competition as part of the celebration of the occasion.

A series of billboard judging site visits covering Aug. 23-31 has been set in place to showcase the various signboards that celebrate Aluf Luta (Rota Wave). Last Wednesday, Aug. 23, the Department of Labor signboard was adjudged in front of the Office of the Mayor at 3:30pm. That same day, the Department of Commerce had theirs evaluated at Ugis at 4pm. Yesterday, the Department of Public Works signboard was up for judging across the Rota Hotel at 3:30pm.

Today, Aug. 25, the Department of Finance judging site is at Tatgua, the entrance to the former Rota Coconut Village Hotel at 3:30pm. Also today, the Department of Lands & Natural Resources secured the Talu’ Curve to post their signboard and be judged at 4pm.

On Monday, Aug. 28, the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, along with its Division of Youth Services and the Aging Program, will have all three registered billboards for judging up and ready at the Cpl. Joe Junior G. Charfauros Veterans Memorial Park shoreline at 3:30pm.

The Department of Public Safety’s signboard is scheduled for judging on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 3:30pm, while the Department of Fire/EMS will get theirs judged at 4pm, both at the same location, Guata Beach Park. Winners of this year’s Aluf Luta signboard competition will take home $300 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place.

The Aluf Luta song competition deadline is scheduled for Aug. 31 and the solo winner will take home $300.
