Borja, Tenorio top Golden Boot races

TanHoldings Football Club’s Taka Borja saved the best for last, as the five goals he scored against Paire FC at the conclusion of the 2017 NMIFA Fall Youth League gave him the Golden Boot title in the boys U14 division.
Coming into their last game in the double-round robin competition, Borja had 10 goals for a tie for first place with Matansa’s Benito Lolobeyong and MP United’s Rintaro Miyawaki. Borja eventually broke the deadlock after hitting five straight goals in TanHoldings’ 12-1 demolition of Paire last Nov. 11. The TanHoldings striker started his string of goals against Paire in the 50th minute and the next four came in the 58th, 59th, 64th, and 66th.
Borja’s five goals—his most in the fall season—brought TanHoldings’ total in 10 games to 35, which led the division and more than nine against champion MP United (26) and ahead by six over runner-up Matansa (29).
Matansa’s Lolobeyong settled for the No. 2 spot in the Golden Boot race as he only made one goal in their last game against Shirley’s for a total of 11. Miyawaki dropped to third, as their match versus Kanoa FC ended up in a scoreless draw. Shirley’s FC’s Rommel Mendoza and MP United’s Richard Steele, who earned nine apiece, and Kanoa’s Markus Toves (8) rounded out the Top 5.
Meanwhile, Sunjoon Tenorio capped his domination in the boys U17 division after collecting 19 goals. Tenorio, who led the Golden Boot race since Week 2 of the competition after making a hat trick against Paire, added two in their last game and 12-1 victory over the National Developing Academy. He made both goals in the opening half, nailing the first in the 19th minute and the second five minutes later.
MP United had a 1-2 finish in the Golden Boot contest, as Tenorio’s teammate Skyler Poon totaled 14 goals. The two MP United strikers were the only players to have more than 10 goals in the fall season.
Matansa’s Louie Calayag fell short with his nine despite posting four in their 10-0 domination of Paire during the division’s final game at the Hopwood Middle School Field last Nov. 11. MP United’s Anthony Fruit and TanHoldings’ Mark Esalan completed the Top 7 after earning eight and seven, respectively.
