Marianas gets Best Island Travel Destination award

Adding to its growing list of international accolades founded on a rebounded tourism economy, the Marianas has been named Best Island Travel Destination by the organizing committee of the 4th Shenzhen International Tourism Expo.

The award was made on Dec. 26, 201, during the three-day exhibition, which attracted over 426 exhibitors from more than 40 countries and regions, including Thailand, Poland, Korea, Dominica, and Peru.

The exhibition also drew 85,657 expo visitors include trade buyers, other trade representatives, and consumers.

“We are extremely grateful to the 4th Shenzhen International Tourism Expo for selecting the Marianas to receive this award, which tells us we are on the right track as far as meeting the expectations of our visitors and giving them a memorable experience in our islands,” said Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Christopher A. Concepcion, who attended the expo. “Ensuring the continuation of that quality experience [on] Saipan, Tinian, and Rota remains our goal through destination enhancement projects, exciting signature events, and support to our hospitality workforce, which is the backbone of the industry. This is an award we can all take pride in.”

Nearly 230,000 mainland Chinese tourists visited the Marianas last fiscal year, accounting for 35 percent of total visitor arrivals. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Hong Kong have non-stop flights to Saipan, while nearly 20 cities across the country have opened transit flights to the destination. (MVA)
