Woman drowns at Forbidden
A 30-year-old Korean woman drowned, while her 32-year-old husband is still missing after swimming in the waters off Forbidden Island last Saturday.
According to the Department of Public Safety, at approximately 12:14pm last Jan. 13, DPS received word about a drowning incident at the Forbidden Island in Kagman.
A female witness who reported the incident said the two went underwater and failed to resurface.
DPS Boating Safety officers responded to the scene and were later joined by the Department of Fire and Emergency Management Services and the U.S. Coast Guard, which launched their helicopter from Guam at 3:37pm.
DPS conducted a sea search, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, while DFEMS search-and-rescue did a cliffline search.
The woman’s body was found at around 1:32pm near the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort clubhouse cliffline. She was immediately brought to the Commonwealth Health Center. She was pronounced dead by Dr. Nicholas R. Villalon at 2:40pm.
The man, who is believed to be her husband due to the IDs found in their rental vehicle, remains missing.
DPS stopped the search for the man at 6:21pm Saturday evening due to lighting conditions and resumed the search yesterday morning. DPS has yet to release information on the man’s whereabouts.
Boating Safety, the U.S Coast Guard, Fish and Wildlife’s boat, and the DFEMS joined DPS in the search yesterday.
In related news, a near-drowning incident on Managaha Island was also reported last Saturday at 11:21am.
A 26-year-old Chinese female was transported to the Smiling Cove Marina via Tasi Tour boat and was conscious upon arrival.
The woman was immediately transported to CHC and has been treated and released as of yesterday.
According to DPS the victim arrived on Managaha at 9:30am and went for a swim at the northwestern side of the island.
The victim, who did not know how to swim, followed her friend into the water and panicked when her feet could no longer touch the seafloor.
