Demapan is new CDA chair

David S. Demapan is the new chairman of the Commonwealth Development Authority board, replacing Ignacio Perez on the seat.
Demapan was elected chairman during a board meeting last Saturday. The chairmanship has been vacant since Dec. 20.
Along with Demapan, who represents Saipan, others elected last Saturday were vice chair Diego M. Songao of Rota and Frank Lee Borja from Tinian as board secretary.
CDA executive director Manual A. Sablan said that, as the board officials have just been named, meeting agendas and projects have yet to be planned.
“Since the board is new, we have not discussed any plans that we plan to execute in 2018 but we are putting together our budget to meet the requirements that will be submitted to Gov. [Ralph DLG] Torres,” he said. “Hopefully, we would all be able to sit down and review the budget at the next board meeting.”
Demapan’s election to the CDA chairmanship also means the agency will finally have a representative on the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board. Public Law 18-17, Article 3, Section 8131 states that the CDA chairman simultaneously holds a seat on the CUC board.
Last Jan. 2, CUC had its first board meeting for 2018 without a chairman.
The term of former CDA chair Ignacio Perez expired last Dec. 20, making him lose his seat at the CUC board.
“Our new board chair Demapan should be in the next CUC board meeting to represent the CDA and we know our chair will do a great job at that,” Sablan said.
“The CDA board members work and collaborate very well. We don’t see any potential problem on this thing as the board has been working closely and this is just a change of leadership but still working on the same goals,” Sablan added.
