Coach-player tandem triumphs

The teacher and student pair of Jeff Race and Juncheol Hwang had a successful partnership as they won the mixed up doubles crown in the 2018 Coconut Tennis Classic.
The No. 2 seed Race and Hwang ruled the 32-player field after sweeping No. 3 Ken Song and Isaac Heo in the finals, 7-5, 6-3, last Monday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts. Race and one his students at Aces Tennis Academy made it to the title game last Sunday after eliminating No. 4 Robbie Schorr and J.C. Ferrer in a closely fought three-set semis match, 6-7, 7-3, 10-6.
Song and Heo, on the other hand, needed only two sets to pull off an upset over No.1 seed Peter Loken and Daniel Heo, 6-4, 7-6, to take the finals berth at the upper half of the draw and set up a championship showdown against Race and Hwang.
Meanwhile, other winners in the Northern Mariana Islands Tennis Association-sanctioned tournament were Daniel Jeoung, Irin Chung, David Kwon, and Helen Kim.
Kim got the girls U12 singles crown after slipping past Ye Jin Son in the finals, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8. Kwon notched the boys championship after earning a 5-0 record in the round-robin competition. Kwon sealed the title and got a perfect record after a 6-3, 6-0 win over La Hunn Lam last Monday.
In the U10 age group, which also had a round-robin format, Danny Jeoung prevailed against three other players to win the boys crown, while Chung won over two opponents.
