SSHS choir makes debut
The Saipan Southern High School choir showcased their talents and also raised funds for new equipment in a concert at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center last Tuesday.
The Saipan Southern High School has been known for many things such as their outstanding academic accomplishments, their prestigious Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp achievements, and more, but not so much for the vocal talents on campus.
Since taking over the SSHS music program about a year ago, SSHS music instructor Lane Hoit has since organized ways for the community to witness the extraordinary singing talents hidden at Saipan Southern High.
According to Hoit, the concert last Tuesday night was the second choir concert he has organized for the SSHS Choir club.
“The purpose is to give the kids a chance to perform because part of their curriculum in a music class is performing and also just gives them a chance to show their parents, their friends, and the community what we are doing in class,” he said.
At the concert, a box was put on display where parents, friends, or basic concert attendees could place donations.
“The funds usually go to purchasing musical instruments or for other emergencies that may come up and we need funds quickly but right now those funds would most likely go toward music,” said Hoit.
The Saipan Southern High School choir consists of 45 students that range from ninth grade to 12th grade and were divided into two groups: group one (grades 9 and 10), and group 2 (grades 11 and 12).
Saipan Tribune later learned that Saipan Southern High School has been using musical equipment like percussions that date back years.
Interested donors or individuals interested in seeing the SSHS choir in action can attend the choir’s next concert in May. Details are to be announced.
