Former world champ holds long distance casting clinics
Former world champion and record holder Roger Mortimore of United Kingdom will arrive on Saipan today in time for a series of long distance casting clinics in the CNMI.
Mortimore, who also used to chair the United Kingdom Surfcasting Federation, will hold a free casting clinic on Saipan tomorrow in the waters off Surf Club in Chalan Kanoa. Casting is the act of throwing bait or a lure using a fishing line out over the water using a flexible fishing rod. Mortimore’s session is divided into two parts with the 9am to 11am clinic for men and father and son participants. Women anglers or mother and daughter pairs will have their turn from 1pm to 3pm.
Then on Monday, Mortimore will head to Tinian for the 4:30pm to 6:30pm session at the Krammer Beach. The visitor’s last stop will be Rota with the clinic to be held on Wednesday, May 23, at the Songsong Roundhuse from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.
Participants in the free clinics are requested to bring their own gear, which include a sinker tied to one line’s end.
Gary Liddle of the Liddle-Mesa Friendship, Inc. is organizing the series of clinics and encourages interested anglers and others to capitalize on the opportunity to learn from a world-renowned casting expert.
According to Liddle, Mortimore won the European title three times and he also took three world championships while suiting up for the United Kingdom national team. The Brit has also held seminars and clinics around the world, having stops in Holland, France, Italy, South Africa, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand.
Mortimore is now based in the U.S. and has done similar casting clinics in New Jersey, Delaware, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, and Hawaii (Oahu).
“Roger is a world-record holder in long distance casting and has cast well over 800 feet. The current world record is around 930 feet. He likes to travel and fish and help people catch more fish than usual. He’s aware that he has a talent to compete and the ability to pass on his knowledge and skills,” Liddle said.
