Public warned of high surf
Based on the information from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, the swell from Tropical Storm Soulik is creating hazardous surf.
The high surf advisory remains in effect until 5am Monday.
The swell from Soulik, in combination with local wind waves, will produce hazardous surf on south and west facing reefs until Friday, then could reach north facing reefs over the weekend.
Waves and surf will remain hazardous at 8 to 12 feet along south facing reefs and between 7 and 10 feet along west facing reefs.
The hazardous surf on south facing reefs will remain hazardous through tonight. Surf along west facing reefs will remain hazardous through at least Sunday night.
There will be a high risk of rip currents on south and west facing reefs, which could be of particular concern at the rather busy Tumon Bay in Guam.
The public is being advised to avoid venturing near reef lines and beaches, especially those facing south and east. Large breaking waves can knock you down and cause serious injuries. Strong rip currents will be life threatening. If you become caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible.
