Rota shelterees head home
The almost 20 families that sought shelter at the Rota Aging Office last Sept. 9 just before Typhoon Mangkhut plowed through Rota are finally preparing to head home.
According to Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Robert Hunter, shelterees at the Rota Aging Office are preparing to go back to their homes after first inspecting their homes with the help of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Red Cross-NMI Chapter.
“Right now, [the Rota Aging Office] is case-managing the families here and doing all these inspections to find out what the conditions of the [shelterees’] homes are in,” he told Saipan Tribune yesterday.
“Those that have major damage to their homes receive temporary shelter and tents and all of the sheltered families are going through the ‘Red Cross process’ to avail of a one-time temporary assistance from the organization, which I understand is financial,” he added.
Hunter noted that, as of publication, the Aging Office is still processing the families, and that he predicts all the shelterees to be assessed by Thursday.
“There are already a bunch of families out of the shelter and the remaining [families] should be taken cared of by Thursday,” he said.
Although he is unaware of the exact number of remaining families at the Aging Office, Hunter noted that the number continues to go down, as they are being interviewed as of publication.
Mangkhut is now in China and making its way northwest with maximum speed of 287 kph, or 178mph.
According to previous information from DCCA, there were 34 total shelterees on Rota—17 each at the Rita Hocog Inos Jr./Sr. High School and the Rota Aging Office.
Saipan shelterees previously totaled 516, while Tinian had 72.
