Tinian Cliff Fishing Derby rescheduled
Due to the series storms and Typhoon Mangkhut these past months, the 2018 Tinian Cliff Fishing Derby has been rescheduled to Nov. 9 to 11.
At the request of its co-organizers, the 16th Tinian Municipal Council and Tinian Mayor’s Office, the Marianas Visitors Authority has agreed to push back the date to accommodate more anglers and give organizers time to clean up access roads to the derby sites that are affected by the recent typhoon.
“We are very excited to be organizing and supporting more events to draw visitors to Tinian, such as the Chief Taga Festival held earlier this month and the upcoming Tinian Cliff Fishing Derby,” MVA managing director Christopher A. Concepcion. “At the same time, we are sensitive to the reality that Tinian events often require the mobilization of many government offices and personnel, and at this time, those resources have been tied up with recovery from Typhoon Mangkhut and the Chief Taga Festival. The new derby date will give us a chance to regroup. We look forward to welcoming fishermen from Saipan, Rota, Guam, and the Asia-Pacific region to enjoy a great weekend of fishing on Tinian in November.”
The designated derby fishing sites for the Tinian Cliff Fishing Derby will be Puntan Diablo, Fleming Point 1, and Fleming Point 2. Registration is $20. Derby orientation will be at 5pm on Nov. 9, followed by the derby that will end at 10am on Nov. 11.
Cash prizes have also been increased for the most variety, biggest fish, and total weight. In the most variety and total weight categories, the MVA will award $500 for first place, $300 for second, and $200 for third. For the biggest fish category, the grand prize will be $1,000, $300 for second, and $200 for third.
