The University of Guam’s Political Science Program and the Political Science Student Association will be hosting a lecture with former president Johnson Toribiong of Palau this Thursday, Nov. 15, at the University of Guam in the CLASS Lecture Hall, starting at 6pm.

Toribiong served as president of Palau from 2009 to 2013, during which he negotiated the renewal of Palau’s Compact of Free Association with the United States. He is a prominent lawyer with a juris doctorate from the University of Washington, a former senator, and a former ambassador to Taiwan.

“As the discussion of self-determination becomes more prominent for the island of Guam, the experiences that our neighboring islands have endured, as well as their negotiation process with the United States, is an area that we can all benefit from when choosing our autonomy,” said Arun R. Swamy, associate professor of political science and coordinator of the Political Science Program at UOG. (PR)
