Two days after Super Typhoon Yutu’s devastation, the Commonwealth Ports Authority issued four emergency notices and emergency expenditure of funds totaling $1.4 million.

CPA board financial affairs committee chair Kimberlyn King-Hinds said these were for the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport, amounting to $600,000; Port of Saipan, $300,000; Tinian International Airport, $300,000; and Port of Tinian, $200,000.

King-Hinds said CPA issued the emergency notices and emergency expenditure of funds were issued last Oct. 27.

Yutu hit Saipan and Tinian last Oct. 24 and 25, causing massive destruction. The Saipan airport was shut down and it was only last Nov. 23 that the first international commercial flight arrived on Saipan.

King-Hinds said the emergency notice would possibly be amended to increase the authorized amount due to the severe damage sustained by the Saipan airport.

This item was discussed at the CPA board committee meeting last Monday.
