Real ID system to launch this year

The Real ID System that aims to unify the systems of various government and local agencies in the CNMI is expected to launch this year.
In interview with Department of Public Safety Commissioner Robert Guerrero, he said the Real ID System has been in the works for a while and is nearly ready to be fully implemented in a few months.
“We’re ready to actually launch the issues of those IDs but full compliance is within the next three to four months,” he said.
Although the system is ready to be launched, Guerrero said that they would have to link systems with the American Motor Vehicle Association in order to have it fully operational nationwide.
“It requires a link with the American Motor Vehicle Association, it’s going to be nationwide…” he said.
Guerrero explained that the purpose for the IDs that will be issued from the Real ID System is to allow travel between any of the U.S. territories with the use of just one identification card.
“I know the Real ID System is going to link all of our systems to the Homeland Security system, the passport system, CBP, TSA, the hospital. It will comprise of everything so it’s going to be a little bit harder to get a driver’s license because all the systems are going to be linked to all those agencies… Once you get that, you can travel to any U.S. territory just using your ID,” he said.
Aside from the Real ID System, DPS aims to push forward with e-ticketing system soon, after issues are solved.
“There was an issue with the e-ticketing and my position was always if we’re going to implement e-ticketing, it has to be across the board without patrol vehicles. it cannot be just traffic and print, it has to be across the board. We cannot be issuing e-tickets on one side and paper tickets on the other,” he said.
