LITERARY NOOK

April is National Poetry Month

Share

National Library Week has passed. Did you hear or read Gov. Ralph DLG Torres’ comments on the importance of libraries in our CNMI community? Tinian Mayor Edwin Aldan also stressed the importance of libraries as a multiple source of knowledge and education in his proclamation last Monday. Did you go to the library last week? Take your children? Have you checked out a book or used the computers there recently? Have you seen what new books and services are available? I gave a reading of my poetry at the Tinian Public Library proclamation signing last week. April is National Poetry Month. Here are sonnets by me from 2014 and 2018. Enjoy!

Laughter: I am *Luftmensch

I am laughter please do try poetry
full of mirth merriment and beans
with thought of naught but light
and laugh filled lilting shifting scenes
all directions through cerebral space
leading to an event horizon in reverse
where one always escapes insanity
the mundane maudlin inanity or worse
check me out and have no doubt
crack a smile in that face of stone
momentous musical merriment to come
with your friends or home alone
up the long ladder and down the short rope
stay full of laughter, loving life and hope.

*Luftmensch is a Yiddish word, literally airhead, meaning an impractical dreamer.

Sirius, The Dog Star, Sings in the Big Dog Constellation Canis Major

On the cliffs high above the ocean
starlight shines over Pacific calm
the Milky Way divides the sky
above my head hangs Orion’s belt
planets rise slowly in the East
on Mother Earth’s spinning wheel
viewed from northern Long Beach
on clear nights across the reef
Jupiter shines on tranquil water
tonight it is clear and easy to see
typhoon season is coming soon
fresh water springs bubble near the shore
a winter hexagram of bright stars
frames Betelgeuse on Orion’s shoulder
in the Big Dog constellation Sirius sings.
