Inspection and survey of Garapan set

The CNMI Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality, Bureau of Environmental Health, Department of Public Safety, Saipan Mayor’s Office, and Zoning will be working jointly in the next several months to inspect and survey the Garapan tourist district.
This is in order to locate and address the continual source of illegal dumping and littering that poses threats to public health, sanitation, and the environment.

“We care about you and your families’ health, our visitors’ enjoyment of our islands, and the health of our environment,” BECQ said.

All building and business owners will be asked whether they have a valid and reliable method for collecting, hauling, and disposing of the waste generated by their tenants and customers starting March 17, 2014.

Owners will be asked to provide the following:
Valid and current contract with a CNMI licensed and permitted solid waste hauler showing frequency of hauling services.

Current receipts for waste hauling services from a licensed and permitted solid waste hauler or if the owner hauls his own waste.

Personal receipts from Department of Public Works Transfer Station or Landfill Scale House to demonstrate frequency and weights of hauling.

Owners that cannot show documentation of having a reliable trash collection and disposal procedure will be given a list of all available trash haulers and services within the CNMI, and may be subject to additional scrutiny for littering, open dumping, and sanitary violations.

“We hope you agree that Garapan should be one of Saipan’s most sought-after tourist destinations and places to live. Together let’s clean it up,” BECQ said.
