Public warned of high surf, high risk rip currents
A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6pm Saturday. That means there is a high risk of rip currents through Saturday afternoon.
Also, a small craft advisory remains in effect until 6pm today, Friday. That means winds and seas will remain hazardous to small vessels.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, a southwest monsoon swell will continue to produce hazardous surf through the rest of the week along south- and west-facing reefs.
Hazardous surf between 10 and 13 feet will continue along south and west facing reefs. Surf will begin to slowly subside through the remainder of the week. Surf will remain hazardous through Saturday.
Dangerous rip currents are expected along south- and west-facing reefs through Saturday.
Large surf will produce localized beach erosion and dangerous conditions for swimmers and beach goers.
Seas will begin to subside Friday and are expected to fall below hazardous levels of 10 feet Friday evening.
Avoid venturing out along south- and west-facing reefs and beaches. Large breaking waves can knock you down and cause serious injuries. Strong rip currents will be life threatening. There is a high risk of rip currents. If you become caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against the current as you will tire quickly. Heed the advice of lifeguards. (PR)
