To raise funds to help boost library services for the CNMI, the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library is hoping to get 144 players to join the 4th Annual Friends of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Golf Tournament Fundraiser on Nov. 10 at the west course of the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort.
“We have a capacity of about 144 golf players to join our tournaments,” JKPL technical services librarian Beth Demapan said. “We were really hurt last year [due to Super Typhoon Yutu] so we did not have our golf tournament.”
Demapan said the numbers are building right now, especially with major prizes from sponsors pouring in to help the cause. The golf tournament is considered the library’s biggest fundraiser.
Last Friday, Pacifica Insurance Underwriters, Inc., a hole-in-one sponsor for the fourth annual golf tournament fundraiser, donated $5,000 to the library.
“On behalf of the technical staff and management of the public library, we thank Pacifica Insurance Underwriters, Inc. for their commitment to literacy,” Demapan said.
Pacifica Insurance president and chief operations officer Shirley Ann T. Sablan said the company believes in JKPL and its mission.
“We support the fundraiser golf tournament because we believe in JKPL and what it stands for. Keep reading, CNMI,” Sablan said.
This is one of many partnerships the JKPL has with the insurance company in promoting literacy in the CMMI. For the hole-in-one sponsorship, the company is giving the lucky winner a $5,000 cash prize.
“We hope that that entices more golfers to come and participate, and join in the golf tournament,” Demapan said. “We hope everybody could come out and play. It is going to be a fun time to experience the last and the biggest tournament of the season.”
Proceeds from the 4th Annual Friends of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library go to support the resource and collection development, circulation materials, and the free programs and services the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, the Bookmobile, the Tinian Public Library, and the Antonio C. Atalig Memorial Library provide for the CNMI.
