Historic rookie season for Tenorio

Many-time CNMI National Team player Sunjoon Tenorio is having an impressive rookie season in the National Collegiate Athletics Association.
The Suffolk University freshman has just earned his third straight Rookie of the Week honors from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, according to the school’s official athletics website. Tenorio is the first Ram to be named the top rookie over a seven-day stretch, three times in one season in the GNAC record books. His third consecutive award was announced last Oct. 21.
Tenorio has scored in the last six games of the Rams and delivered 10 of Suffolk’s 20 goals so far this season. The Rams hold a 5-7-1 win-loss-draw record in the 11-team GNAC and Tenorio lifted the squad to a 1-1 win-loss mark when he got his third straight Rookie of the Week Honors.
The former MP United striker, who was also responsible for helping his two teammates score to earn a Suffolk-leading 22 points, made the dagger in their victory over Mitchell—his fifth game winner this season. Tenorio also became the first Ram to score against the University of St. Joseph in their 1-2 loss to the Blue Jays.
Despite his numerous achievements, Tenorio admitted it took him awhile to get use to playing in the collegiate ranks.
“It took some time for me to get used to the style of play here in the states, but once I got adjusted I started to play very well,” said Tenorio, adding that he is just repaying the trust that their coaches gave him. Austin Burrows is the interim head coach of the Rams, while Charlie Spurr and Juan Gonzalez are the assistants.
“My coaches here put a lot of trust in me and I am a big part of this team. I have been able to strive because of the trust I received from both my teammates and coaches. I am very proud and thankful for the rookie of the week honors, and I will continue to do my best to get more and help our team,” the prized rookie said.
Tenorio and the Rams, who are competing under NCAA Division II, will be back on the pitch today to play against Lasell, while their last two matches this month will be versus Colby-Sawyer (Oct. 26) and Rivier (Oct. 30).
