Twenty-four high school students were inducted into Mount Carmel School’s Sacred Heart Chapter of the National Honor Society in a ceremony held last March 11, 2020, at Mount Carmel Cathedral.

The ceremony was led by deacon Tony Yarobwemal, school administrators, and society officers.

The inductees were selected by a faculty council that reviewed applications from sophomores and upperclassmen who had maintained a grade point average of 3.0 and had demonstrated how they had fulfilled the society’s values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

This year’s inductees are Haesu Yeo, Christian Felix C. Guerrero, Vaughn Andrei A. Mallari, Theresa Rose C. Schweiger, Jeremiah Jerome H. Diaz, Puti’on Primitiva Palacios-Camacho, Kaia Travilla, William Nathaniel E. Ano, Fiona Marielle A. Bucalig, Larry Dean T. Cruz, Vincent John P. Reyes, Aleia H. Santos, Kevin Kang, Richard Jesus M. Villagomez, Riley Anne O. Buenaventura, Brian Youn, Casey Pathil, Trinity Ann Camacho Cruz, Connie L. Zhu, Jefferey Y. Sheu, Kiana Lei M. Propst, Victoria P. Ancheta, and Sinahi Ray Fleming Cepeda.

The keynote speaker for the ceremony was Marie Tenorio, CNMI Public School System Special Education teacher. Tenorio, an MCS alumna, or AlumKnight, and former member of the Sacred Heart Chapter, shared what service truly means and for NHS members to observe the needs in the community and to take action in service of others.

“My wish is that you all see that your involvement in NHS goes beyond having a fancy stole or sash, goes beyond your GPA and being able to list it on your college applications,” said Tenorio. “It’s about making connections with the everyday pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. It’s about your commitment to learning and growing, your passion and humility that drives you, it’s finding inspiration in the success of others, the heart in your service to your family, school, and our community. It’s about embodying qualities of good character.”

In his closing remarks, school president Dr. Galvin Deleon Guerrero shared a poem highlighting the continued strength of MCS students and community despite the adverse trials everyone faces in the community and around the world.

After the ceremony, the inductees and their families were treated to light refreshments at the Joeten Daidai Social Hall.

Established in 1921, NHS is the nation’s premier organization that recognizes outstanding high school students, with more than one million student members who demonstrate the society’s trademark values of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Mount Carmel School’s Sacred Heart Chapter of the NHS was opened in 1997. (PR)
