Man accidentally shoots self and is later arrested

A man who was reportedly wounded in a drive-by shooting in San Jose, Saipan, but was then found out to have shot himself accidentally was later arrested and charged with illegal discharge of a firearm.

According to the news release from the CNMI Department of Public Safety, DPS received a 911 call on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020, at about 10:10pm, reporting a gunfire incident in the village of San Jose on Saipan. Police units were rushed to the scene.

At the scene, officers met with the caller who informed them that their friend was shot in the leg from a passing vehicle. Officers got the description of the vehicle and immediately notified all units to be on the look-out. Officers reported that the victim was screaming in pain and was lying face up and bleeding from his left thigh. Medics quickly brought Don Jr. Pangelinan Sanchez to the Commonwealth Health Center for further treatment. 

After further investigation, officers learned from witnesses at the scene that the incident was self-inflicted due to an accidental discharge of a handgun. The pistol was later recovered and procured as evidence.  

On Sept. 4, 2020, Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio issued an arrest warrant for Sanchez for the charges of unlawful discharge of a firearm, storage of a firearm, person permitted to process ammunition, and firearm owner’s identification card requirement with bail set a $30,000.

On Sept. 7, 2020, officers, along with the Rapid Response Team, executed the arrest warrant for Sanchez in San Antonio, Saipan. Sanchez was found in his vehicle before his arrest and was brought to the Criminal Investigations Bureau for further questioning before being transported to the Department of Corrections where he was booked and detained. (PR)
