$5K bail for man who allegedly robbed JJ Market for cigarettes
The Superior Court imposed last week a $5,000 cash bail on a man who was arrested for allegedly robbing JJ Market to steal a carton of cigarettes, among other things.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph Camacho imposed the $5,000 cash bail on Edward Gene W. Richards, a 23-year-old man who was allegedly armed with a machete and a knife when he robbed JJ Market in Koblerville.
Richards allegedly committed the robbery on Oct. 31 at around 7pm and the items stolen were a carton of Marlboro cigarettes worth $77 and about $800 cash.
Richards was ordered to return to court on Nov. 12 at 9am for his preliminary hearing and on Nov. 17 at 9am for his arraignment.
The Office of the Public Defender was appointed to represent Richards while assistant attorney general Heather Barcinas appeared for the government.
According to court documents, police identified Richards as the perpetrator after reviewing the security camera footage of the store.
The store cashier informed police that she knew Richards because he was a frequent customer of the store.
Police officers later went to Richards’ house in Koblerville to meet with his family about the robbery. After briefing the family about what had happened at JJ Market, police asked the family to call the police when he returns home.
The following day, Nov. 1, Richards’ sister called the police and said that he had returned home and wanted to surrender.
While in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Bureau, Richards admitted that he robbed JJ Market and he also admitted to arming himself with a machete and a knife. Richards also stated that he was still wearing the same clothes he used during the robbery.
