Guma Hustisia construction project to be done next week

The CNMI Judiciary’s construction of its COVID-19 Screening and Security Zone continues at the front of the Guma Hustisia building. HBR International Inc. construction workers are seen in the photo working on the top portion of the screening and security zone. The ground floor will include a cashier room, queue area, vestibule, and a covered walkway/entry. Services normally provided at the courthouse entrance are currently relocated to the second floor of the Marianas Business Plaza. The construction project began in Oct. 13, 2020. (NEIL FAMA)

Construction of the COVID-19 Screening and Security Zone at entrance to the Guma Hustisia is set to be completed next week.

According to one of the workers on site, they anticipate the project will be completed by next Monday.

The Supreme Court on the first floor remains closed due to its close proximity to the ongoing construction work.

In a press release from the Commonwealth Judiciary Administrative Office, construction of the SSZ was originally set for completion by mid-January 2021.

The SSZ is being built using federal funds provided through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act or CARES Act. The Judiciary received its allocation of CARES Act funds back in June 2020.

According to Saipan Tribune archives, the CNMI Judiciary has reopened two of the six courtrooms of the Guma Hustisia, two years since they were closed back in 2018.

Since mid-January, the Superior Court has been using courtrooms 202 and 205 of the Guma Hustisa, in line with the court’s deadline to fully reopen the courthouse to the public by June this year.
